I had seen Chaos come up on Netflix as a movie I’d love, but never got around to checking it out. I’m a fan of Jason Statham, and if I were to tell you that Jason Statham and Wesley Snipes were to be in a movie together, in opposing roles, you’d probably start getting wet just thinking about watching these two beating the crap out of each other. That’s what I thought when I saw this movie on the shelf. Before this point, I didn’t realize that these two were in it together. I put this one in the cart and went home for what I hoped to be two hours of cinematic ass kicking, I couldn’t have been more wrong…
It starts off strong, with Lorenz (Snipes) robbing a bank and taking everybody inside hostage. Lots of guns and excitement so far. When the cops arrive, Lorenz says that he will only talk to Det. Conners (Statham), and of course, they need to track him down because he is suspended for being too bad ass. The way these guys talk, Conners is like a modern day Demolition Man. Conners plays negotiator, but Lorenz seems to be a step ahead the whole time. They decide to send S.W.A.T. in, and you are at the edge of your seat waiting to see Lorenz kick his way through half a S.W.A.T. unit when everybody realizes that it’s a trap. There is an explosion, and then everybody runs out of the bank. No fight scene, no action, no payoff, but the movie is only just starting, we got a ways to go, right?
Not really, the whole movie goes like this. They keep making it seem like there is going to be a great fight, but then they end it with an explosion or single bullet. Nobody actually fights in this one.
Well, almost nobody, there is a climactic fight scene. However, it’s not between who you think it would be. The hero in this fight is Det. Dekker, as played by Ryan Phillippe. Yup, the guy you probably only remember because he was in that movie where Buffy totally kissed that other chick, gets to steal the action from Jason Statham.
I really wanted to hate this movie due to its lack of violence, unfortunately, it’s still a good movie. I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars, just don’t watch it if you are in the mood for action, it’s a drama with the occasional explosion, not an action movie.
