It appears that currently, there is a big battle over Superman going on. The heirs of Jerome Siegel are fighting for both the copyright and profits with DC and Warner Brothers. Topless Robot puts forth some interesting ideas for the future of Superman, such as, him joining the Marvel Universe. Myself, I couldn’t really care. I’m not a fan of Superman and characters like him.
It’s nothing personal, I’m sure that he’s a fine upstanding guy, it’s just the type of hero that he is. He’s invulnerable, he has super strength, eye lazors, ice breath, flight, x-ray vision, and who knows what else. He can do preetty much anything that he wants to do. The only way to stop him is to get your hands on kryptonite or Doomsday. Anything else won’t do much. And even if you do kill him, he’ll just come back, but that’s true with any comic book character I guess…
This brings me to Heroes, and of course, some possible spoilers after the jump
I watched season 1, and I made a prediction about a couple of characters. Syler, Peter, and Hiro are all too powerful. They are the Supermen of Heroes.
Syler is limited only in that he has to kill to take the power from someone else, but otherwise, he has pretty much limitless power as long as he keeps doing what he is doing. Peter is the same, but lacking that the limit of having to kill. If they both continued gathering power at the rate that they were, not only would half the cast be dead, but we’d have a couple of demigods walking around the city throwing mountains at each other, or perhaps more like miniature Godzillas, complete with radioactive breath.
Hiro is another matter entirely. Hiro and Peter never really met up until the very end of the season, and even then, they may not have gotten close enough for Peter to absorb his power. Hiro’s power alone could kill the series. Once he has the ability to control his power, all he has to do is just go back in time and change things. Claire dies, he goes back and prevents this, that was the plot of the first season, “Save the Cheerleader, save the world.” Peter dies? Well, just hop back a few seconds and teleport him away. Syler about to kill the pope, well, just go back and teleport him to a volcano. Last time you went back in time screwed up too many things? No problem, just go back and undo what you redid and try again!
I told some of my friends that while I liked the show, these three characters would eventually kill it unless they did something to either remove them or take away their powers. And how does season two start? Hiro is in feudal Japan, Syler is powerless in the jungle somewhere, and Peter is in Ireland with no memory.
Maybe that’s my superpower, I can see the future of TV shows…
