I just finished watching season one of Heroes. I love it, but I do have a few issues.
Spoilers after the jump.
First question that I would have, how the hell did Syler become president? Well, I guess I know how he became president, the real question is, how did he remain president?
First problem to his reign is Matt. Matt reads minds, in five years, one would believe that he would pick up just exactly who the president was. We know that Matt didn’t know because at one point Syler says that he’s harmless, all he does is fly. Now, I guess it’s possible that Syler killed Nathan closer to the reveal, and that Nathan really was president for five years. It is possible I blinked and missed that part I guess, but to me, it appeared that Syler was president for the five years since the explosion, not Nathan.
After Matt is the Haitian. The Haitian has the power to stop or at least dampen other’s powers. One would have to assume again, that at some point, Syler’s shape changing ability would have been interfered with, making him assume his true form and revealing himself. It is possible that he has sided with Syler, but I find that a little unlikely. He works for Nathan’s mother, and while she would probably sell out either of her children, I don’t see her as siding with Syler.
Then we get to the paradox. Syler lived because he killed Claire, and after he was stabbed, he regenerated. We know this because that is what Hiro tells himself. Future Hiro bases his whole timeline on this fact. That is why you have to save the cheerleader to save the world. Present Hiro tells future Hiro that he saved Claire. This means that when future Hiro stabbed Syler, he couldn’t have healed, thus he couldn’t have become president. Now, one could make the argument that Hiro exists outside of the normal flow of time, and as such, he would be the only person to “remember” alternate timelines that existed for them, but not nesscessarily the new ones that have been created.
