I finally got around to ordering a cable set I can use to connect my extra hard drives via USB without having to get a full enclusure.
I plugged in the first hard drive, and almost immediatly caught a faint scent of burning. Unplugged, opened the PC up, connected it to one of the spare power cables in there, and nothing. That drive is dead. Connected the other one to the internal power supply and it worked fine. I then connected teh USB cable, and nothing. Windows doesn’t pick anything up at all. Checked the jumpers, went back to the manual* and it says set them to master. Every thing is set correctly. I unplug it all, change the jumpers to cable select, plug it all back in, and I got the data from the second drive now.
Problem is, now I have to figure out what I am going to do with the one that fried. It’s got almost 80 Gb of data that I wouldn’t mind having again, but I don’t think I want to pay exhorbitant fees to get it all back. The drive platters should be fine, it’s just either the motor or the board that is done, so it shouldn’t be too hard to get it all back. Anybody got a good recovery service out there or know what this will cost me? I tried to get a couple of quotes, but they don’t seem to want to say anything unless I send my drive in to them, and I’d rather not send my drive all around the country getting quotes…
