If you look at every religion out there, they generally have opposing forces. These aren’t nesscessarily good vs evil. It may be as simple as creation or life versus death or destruction and order versus chaos. Or even going into the more strange ideas such as the Norse belief in Thor versus Frost Giants, or the Bhuddist belief in Nirvana versus Courtney Love. These opposing forces don’t always have to be bad. Shiva serves her purpose more than just being the destroyer, and Hole has a catchy tune or two…
One thing that you do see however, is that there is normally a following for this opposing force. There are always people that believe that choosing this other, dark, force is the better option. That the rewards gained out weigh the cost, or that they can actually defeat the “good” side.
Now enter Scientology. The opposing force in Scientology is Xenu, the ex-galactic overlord. Before being deposed, he rounded up millions of his people from the 76 planets and had them killed at in the volcanoes on Teegeeack (that’s Earth to you and me). From the souls of these dead aliens, we get thetans. And it is these thetans that infect us today, causing all of our problems. The goal of Scientology, aside from getting all your money, is to rid your body of these thetans, releasing your godlike powers and freeing you. Xenu himself is locked under a mountain, I believe, so that his reign of galactic terror could never be reborn.
Now, Xenu wasn’t an evil god. He didn’t send people to Hell or have any eternal punishment. In fact, according to doctrin, he made up hell. The only downside one could have to siding with him would be if he gets deposed again, or if he decides that you have failed one too many times. You could kinda view him as Emperor Palpatine. He’s an evil old man, but with tons of power, and not just the force, he’s got just tones and tons of political power. He’s got followers who would throw down their lives for him. If you pissed him off, he would blow up your freaking planet. Xenu was probably a lot like that.
Now, as dangerous as siding with Xenu would be, just imagine the power you could attain. And so what if you are doing bad things, there isn’t a hell. In fact, you actually get reincarnated when you die, so it’s really no loss. As long as you could stomach the obliteration whole planets of people, you’re good to go.
One has to wonder if there is a secret cult to Xenu. Are there groups out there that are trying to return him to power. Groups that want to place him back on his magic throne? Do they exist in the back alleys of Hollywood? Are they maybe the hidden power behind big psychiatry? Do they work perhaps in NASA on secret projects to send rockets back to the original home of the Galactic Confederation? Is there a black metal band in some where Norway making music dedicated to Xenu?
Perhaps we will never know, or at least, not until it is too late…
